With a direct oral history stretching back to the Battle of Little Big Horn through his step-grandfather White Man Runs Him — who served as a scout with Gen. George Armstrong Custer — Joe was a noted historian on the period.
He qualified as a war chief through his actions as a U.S. soldier in Germany during WWII.
